The Pros and Cons of e-Learning and Traditional Learning

Since eLearning does not restrict a person to a physical location or time, it has grown rapidly. But is eLearning really taking over the traditional learning?

There are certainly many advantages of eLearning over traditional learning but there is room to make improvements and make up for advantages that students have in traditional learning before it can really take over completely.

In a traditional classroom, teachers have to be on their toes to engage their students at all times. Sometimes the students don’t cooperate and they may be zoned out, bored or unfocused. The lack of engagement is a big challenge in traditional learning because the students don’t have the options to click rewind and go back to the part they stopped paying attention. This means they miss out important stuff.

Also accounting for a learner’s attention span is a problem in a traditional learning setting. Some students feel fatigued after 30 minutes while others after 45 minutes. There is no way to adjust that in a real-time environment. But despite these issues, once the students and teachers connect and find an engagement – it is effective! Students being surrounded by like-minded individuals, participating with their peers with enthusiasm and social energy are not something that can be replaced easily.

ELearning has tried to mimic the social aspects of traditional learning with tools like Facebook groups, message boards and chatbots to let the students feel more interactive. Of course, the students learn more naturally when they are solving problems together and feel validated or encouraged face-to-face in traditional learning.

From a teacher’s perspective, eLearning has tools to give them precise feedback on how the students are engaging with the course material. Teachers are able to see where the students get lost and can grade assignments with just a click.

ELearning is fantastic for students in many ways. They can go back and repeat the parts they don’t understand and find out additional information in their course materials. They can also pick and choose the time of their studies so it offers flexibility and ease. eLearning provides course content to the students which they can access anywhere at any time and which can remain with them for reference for a long period of time.
